Lake Turkana
The world’s largest permanent desert lake, called the Jade Sea for its colour. Its western shore is the closest to Lodwar.

Eliye Springs
Doum palms, warm water and a wide sandy beach on the lake’s western shore. A favourite day out from Lodwar.
Approx. 1–1.5 hrs, partly on sand tracks
Ferguson’s Gulf & Kalokol
A fishing bay and lakeside town where boats set out across the lake. Watch the catch come in at the end of the day.

Central Island National Park
Volcanic crater lakes in the middle of Lake Turkana, part of the Lake Turkana National Parks World Heritage Site. Reached by boat.

Turkwel River
Lodwar sits on the banks of the Turkwel. Its riverine woodland is a green ribbon through the plains and lovely at sunset.

Before you set out
- Start early. The day’s heat builds quickly after mid-morning.
- Travel with a local driver who knows the sand tracks, especially to Eliye Springs.
- Carry more water than you think you need, plus sun protection.
- Ask reception for a packed lunch and an early breakfast the evening before.
